UNSW Onboard and the Authenticated Network Service

Overview

UNSW IT provides two services for Staff and Students to connect specialty devices to the network across campus and within the UNSW residential colleges.

Wireless Access

UNSW_IoT is a wireless service offered by the University to allow specialty devices, consoles and other non-dot1x devices to the network.

This is the preferred way of connecting and can be accessed via https://www.unsw.edu.au/get-online

Wired Access

UNSW IT provides the internet access service for selected UNSW residential colleges. This service operates within the college’s networks only and is not available to users outside of the colleges. Connection is provided to the UNSW network and the Internet at speeds up to 1Gbps. To access the UNSW network and the Internet through Authenticated Network Service, you need to simply connect your computer to the network port in your room and log into the portal to register.

Authenticated Network Service is available to the following residential colleges:

  • University Terraces, High St, Randwick
  • International House ,2 High St, Kensington
  • High Street Apartments, 46 High St, Randwick
  • Barker Apartments, 39, Barker St, Kensington
  • Mulwaree Apartments, 1 Cowper St, Randwick
  • UNSW Colleges:
    • Fig Tree Hall, Kensington Campus
    • Colombo House, Kensington Campus
    • Basser College, Kensington Campus
    • Goldstein College, Kensington Campus
    • Philip Baxter College, Kensington Campus
  • UniLodge, Corner of Anzac Parade and Lorne Avenue, Kensington

IMPORTANT: Copyright infringements on the UNSW Network will result in the student potentially losing access to the network and the possibility of a fine. All customers will still be bound by the acceptable use of IT resources.

What you will need to set up Authenticated Network Service

A Windows compatible PC, running Windows 7 or 10

• An installed network card

• Your UNSW zID and zpass

Step 1 - Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections:

Step 2 - Right-click Local Area Connection and then click Properties. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your computer’s administrator password or provide confirmation:

Step 3 - Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties:

Step 4 - Ensure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are both selected. Then click OK:

Step 5 - Connect one end of the Ethernet cable (usually blue in colour) to the wall socket and the other end to your computer:

Wait up to 30 seconds then open up a web browser like Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and go to any website. If your device does not have a web browser please contact the IT Service Centre (02) 9385 1333 to manually register your device.

 


Step 6 - You will be redirected to the Authenticated Network website where you will need to agree to the “Acceptable Use Policy” by clicking Accept:

Step 7 - To login enter your zID and zPass:

If you do not have a zID and are a UNSW Global Student contact your residential office to arrange access.

If you do not have a zID but have an ‘a’ account (e.g. a8881234) please contact the IT Service Centre to register your device.

If you are having trouble with your zPass please go to the following website https://iam.unsw.edu.au/home.


Step 8 - If you were successful the screen below will appear. Once you have successfully logged in wait about 30 seconds again, after this you are free to access the internet:

If you were unsuccessful you will see the screen below. Ensure you are using the correct zID and zPass and select ‘Click here to try again’. If you still see the screen below, please contact the IT Service Centre.

 

To access the UNSW University Wide Network and the internet through Authenticated Network Service, you need to simply connect your computer to the network port in your room and log into the portal to register. Outlined below are instructions for setting up your Authenticated Network Service access using Mac OS X. You may find your Mac connects automatically if DHCP is already selected.

What you will need to set up Authenticated Network Service

  •  A Mac device

  •  An installed network card

  • Your UNSW zID and zpass

Step 1 - Plug the blue Ethernet cable into your computer or laptop socket with this icon:

Step 2 - Select ‘System Preferences...’ from the Apple menu  (top left of your screen):

Step 3 - Click the Network icon in System Preferences:

Step 4 - Select Built in Ethernet from the left menu of the Network window:

Step 5 - The Location drop-down menu should display Automatic:

Step 6 - Make sure you still have Built in Ethernet selected in the left-hand column and choose Using DHCP from the Configure menu.

Step 7 - When you are finished, click the Apply button:

When you are properly connected, a green button will appear next to the Built-in Ethernet tab and Connected will appear as well.

Step 8 - Wait up to 30 seconds then open-up a web browser like Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer and go to any website.  If your device does not have a web browser, please contact the IT Service Centre (02) 9385 1333 to manually register your device.

Step 11 - If you were successful in logging in, the screen below will appear. Once you have successfully logged in wait about 30 seconds again, after this you are free to access the internet:

If you are using a device that does not have a web browser contact UNSW IT to have this device manually registered for you.
